What is Jabber?

  • Cisco Jabber is software that allows you to use your desktop computer, laptop computer, or mobile device (aka tablet or smartphone) as a voice or video phone with your assigned campus telephone number. In addition, it has features such as voice mail, directory lookups, WebEx integration, desktop sharing, and instant messaging.
  • Cisco Jabber can be used on our campus wired or SJSU_Premier wireless network. Using a laptop or mobile device, calls can be answered anywhere on campus when connected to wireless.

When can I start to use Jabber?

You can begin to use Jabber once you office phone number is converted to the Unified Communications VoIP System. When in your office, you can use Jabber to control your office phone if you have one (i.e., dial from Jabber and use phone for communicating, etc.). You can choose to use Jabber as a "soft phone" and not have a telephone unit in your office.

How do I get Jabber installed?

If you have an active SJSUOne account, contact your local desktop technician to request a Jabber installation on your desktop or laptop. You can download the Jabber app for mobile devices directly from the Apple Store or Google Play. Please email the IT Help Desk at itservicedesk@sjsu.edu and have them open a ticket to Unified Communications so that your account can be provisioned for Jabber for your mobile device.
