Enhanced Computing Resources

Next Generation Project Description

State-of-the-art integrated server, storage and network technology will enable high performing virtual servers to be available with minimal lead time for requests and effectively monitored with enhanced tools.

Virtual desktops and virtual software libraries will allow for online labs instead of physical labs for students and lessen the need for high performance workstations for faculty and staff.

June 2013 Tech Briefing

The Computing Services department within IT Services is building the SJSU Computing Cloud, a private cloud—a computing infrastructure designed so that customers can easily request and operate virtual servers. Built in our Delta College Data Center and SJSU Computer Center, virtual servers are highly available, easy to use, and are safe for sensitive critical data.

Most common applications can be run as virtual servers and Computing Services can help you replace aging physical servers with virtual ones.

If you have servers that must remain physical, then put them in one of our data centers (co-location). Our data centers are professional class, with good physical security for sensitive critical data, fire detection and suppression, battery backup and generator. They are also professionally staffed and with great access to power and networking.

March 2013 Tech Briefing

The basic functionality of finding SJSU employee phone numbers, email addresses and location is available online in the Faculty & Staff Directory.

Improvements have been made including:

  • Search finds results based on contains instead of starts with criteria
  • Search result set is sorted alphabetically in order of last name, first name
  • Phone numbers are displayed in a 9-digit format

January 2013 Tech Briefing

There has been a significant increase in computing and storage resources needed to support the needs of students, faculty and staff at SJSU. We were able to negotiate a service contract with San Joaquin Delta College that was more cost effective than other commercial alternatives. Delta College in Stockton completed a brand new, state-of-the-art data center in early 2011 with capacity beyond its needs to enable hosting other customers.

Since the contract was executed in September, we have installed a CISCO Unified Computing System with 16 blade servers connected to a NetAPP storage area network with over 300 terabytes of storage. Over 40 Next Gen Technology systems have been deployed in our Delta College Data Center to date, with many more to come.
